The home affairs department has warned people of Pretoria to be wary of individuals claiming to be officials of this department.
Spokesperson Thabo Mokgola said no home affairs officials had been deployed to make house visits.
Should home affairs officers be deployed for this purpose, an official announcement would be made.
A message has been circulating on social media, warning of people identifying themselves as home affairs officials, purportedly to check people’s IDs before the local elections.
The impersonators apparently produced documents that had official letterheads of home affairs.
People falling for the trick would then be robbed of valuables in their homes.
Makgola said: “Home affairs officials are clearly identifiable with name tags. We will announce household visits through official government channels.”
